In addition to the elected
positions that make up the PTA, there are non-elected Committee
Chairperson positions, which are appointed by the Board. All these
positions have direct reporting responsibility to the PTA Executive
Board. The following list represents some of the committee
responsibilities. Additional committees may be added as needed.
Please read each description listed below and consider if you are interested in
joining one of them.
Book Fair
This committee is responsible for generating excitement about the Book Fair and making sure all goes according to plan. They can be as elaborate and imaginative as your inner “producer” can make it (within school rules, of course). Scholastic picks the themes and has many pre-created ideas. The Chairperson will have access to the Scholastic website as “Bookfair Coordinator” and will have communication with one of their representatives for guidance and support. The book fair is usually held once a year and is often in conjunction with the Parent Teacher Conference in the fall.
Budget
This committee works closely with the Treasurer and the President to plan the annual budget for the PTA. The committee also monitors the budget throughout the year and helps address any financial issues that may arise.
This committee is responsible for distributing the candy catalog to all school children, collecting the orders, sending reminder notices and the distribution of the candy.
Families will spend time making crafts to give to the PTA to sell at sponsored events. The chairperson will be responsible for forming a committee, developing craft ideas and promoting the making of the crafts.
This committee is responsible for getting Dads more involved in the school. The committee chair could take this committee in any direction he/she chooses; golf outings, fishing with the kids, Father/Daughter dance, Father/Son Baseball Game, etc.)
Fashion Show (High School Participants)
This committee will be responsible for coordinating our Spring Dance, which is held at a catering hall. Responsibilities include planning a menu, hiring a DJ, and organizing the seniors, who will be modeling evening wear. This committee also coordinates donations to make the raffle baskets.
Fashion Show (Lower/Middle School Participants)
This committee will be responsible for coordinating our “In House Fashion Show” which will be held in the Petrides Auditorium. Responsibilities include the selection of clothing to be featured in the show and organizing the student models. This committee also coordinates donations to make the raffle baskets. This event is held in the Spring.
This
committee will research funding opportunities from local, regional and national
sources to fund projects such as the addition of technology throughout the
school and specific classroom/lesson plan related requests. This committee will
be active year round.
This committee coordinates the Halloween party usually held the Saturday or Sunday before Halloween and usually geared towards our K-5 students. Duties include coordinating volunteers for decorating, preparing goody bags, serving food, hiring a DJ, coordinating entertainment and clean-up.
This committee would create a scrapbook for the year documenting the PTA functions and events. They would collect any media reports (from newspapers) to include in the scrapbook. They would have the scrapbook available for viewing at PTA functions
This committee is responsible for organizing the Holiday Fair, which is usually held in early December. The committee will coordinate volunteers, secure merchandise, organize the vendors and arrange for raffle baskets to be prepared.
This committee is responsible for coordinating refreshments at PTA meetings and PTA sponsored events (like the Holiday Fair) and getting volunteers to assist.
This committee is responsible for coordinating the PTA by-laws to comply with the Chancellor’s Bylaws. This year, our bylaws must be reviewed and amended as the Chancellor recently had new by-laws go into effect.
This committee will plan and lead the PTA Membership Drive and shall be responsible for the distribution and collection of the enrollment forms. This committee will also maintain a database of volunteers in order to implement a schedule of volunteers at various PTA events.
This committee would oversee programs at Petrides that are designed to celebrate the cultural diversity found in our school community. These could be “stand alone” programs or programs incorporated within other events
This committee is responsible for collating a monthly newsletter. Information is collected from PTA board meetings, teacher/parent input, and Principal and student accomplishments
This person is responsible for keeping meetings on task and on the agenda and should know Roberts Rules of Order.
This committee is responsible for organizing the Plant Sale, which is usually held on the Friday before Mother’s Day in May. The committee also coordinates volunteers, secures merchandise and organizes the vendors
The Transportation/Safety committee is responsible for safety and transportation
concerns that students and parents may have involving getting to and from school.
This committee coordinates the distribution of the Staten Island Federation of PTA’s scholarship questions to all High School seniors. If more than ten (10) responses are received, this committee coordinates a group of volunteers to read the submissions and narrows the choice to 10 for submission to the Federation Review panel. This committee also administers the Michael J Petrides School PTA scholarship question and coordinates a group of volunteers to select the winner.
This committee spearheads the effort to have the Department of Education recognize the importance of siblings of Petrides students attending our school

It is this committee’s goal to “spread some sunshine” during various occasions that affect our immediate school community, recognizing such events as births, hospitalizations and deaths.
